Fahrradtourismus: von den Seen im Canavese bis zum Gran Paradiso - Piemont
Canavese e Gran Paradiso
IT, EN
#hashtag: Cycling tours Piedmont, Exploring Piedmont by bike, Gravel biking Piedmont. Exploring Piedmont by bike
A tour suitable for everyone, starting from the plains of Canavese and gradually ascending the Orco Valley, to reach Gran Paradiso National Park and conclude at the beautiful Colle del Nivolet (2620 m), a stage of the 2019 Giro d’Italia, offering breathtaking panoramic views. A true unknown and unspoiled wild paradise!
You will have the opportunity to sustainably visit an untouched area of Piedmont, authentic and characterized by a diverse and wild landscape, especially in the upper valley, thanks to Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy’s oldest protected area, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2022), which has protected these areas from urbanization and the development of mass tourism that is disrespectful to the natural environment and the territory.
With its plains, lakes, hills, and imposing mountains, the landscape will never cease to amaze you!
Starting from Santhia, we will ascend the territory of the Ivrea morainic amphitheater, which with an area of over 500 km², is one of the best-preserved geomorphological units of its kind in the world.
We will pass by lakes that bear the memory of ancient glaciers such as Lake Viverone and Lake Candia, cross picturesque villages like Borgomasino, Torre Canavese, Aglie with its Castle, and then ascend the entire Orco Valley. We will marvel at imposing granite walls that have revolutionized the world of climbing (Caporal and Sergent), admire crystal-clear waterfalls cascading for hundreds of meters (Sparone and Noasca), until we reach the plain of Ceresole Reale, the last village in the valley located at 1500m, where the perspective widens and the imposing Tre Levanne mountains are reflected on the homonymous lake.
We are now just a short distance away from Colle del Nivolet, one of the most breathtaking spots in all of Piedmont, where we will be greeted by charming marmots and a flora that has just awakened from the slumber imposed by the snow, which usually lasts until almost June.
Alternatively, starting from Caselle, we will head north, crossing the beautiful hilly area of the “Vauda Nature Reserve” before swiftly passing through the countryside of Rivarolo towards Aglie, where the route will converge with the tour starting from Santhia.
Throughout the entire journey, you will be accompanied by knowledgeable guides fluent in English and equipped with all the necessary logistics, allowing you to focus solely on the scenery and enjoying a harmonious bike ride in nature.
For each overnight stay, we have carefully selected the best eco-friendly accommodations, and all meals will feature local and sustainable products.
Depending on the tour period, you will have the opportunity to witness or directly participate in experiences such as grape harvesting, transhumance, or honey harvesting, immersing yourself even more in the local culture and folklore. Upon request, it is also possible to arrange a visit to the Damanhur community and their incredible temple carved into the rock.

Stage 2: From Cuceglio to Locana
- After a hearty breakfast, we start a gentle ascent towards the protected area of the "Monti Pelati" (Bald Mountains), a unique area characterized by an almost lunar landscape and unique vegetation in Piedmont. This area is home to rare animals and plants and is classified as a protected area.
- Beneath these rocks lies the incredible Damanhur Temple, which is definitely worth a visit if you have an extra day available (the visit is available as one of our extras).
- We continue along the foothills of the Monti Pelati, approaching the pre-Alps. The imposing Quinzeina Sud dominates the landscape at 2230m, and we begin to ascend it, passing through the villages of Castelnuovo Nigra and Santa Elisabetta, until we reach the panoramic point of Pian del Lupo at 1400m, which was a stage of the "Giro d'Italia 2019." Here, we will take a break for lunch and recharge.
- Following the route of the Giro d'Italia, we descend into the characteristic village of Frassinetto, home to one of the longest zip-lines in Piedmont (almost 2 km), and then we arrive at Pont Canavese, known for its ancient towers and churches. Pont Canavese is the place where the Orco and Soana valleys, with their namesake streams that originate from the glaciers of Gran Paradiso, meet the Canavese plain. This area is of great prehistoric interest due to the rock carvings in the "Boira Fusca" cave.
- From Pont Canavese, we slowly ascend the Orco Valley, passing through Sparone, which is home to the Pissa waterfall, approximately 120m high, one of the tallest in Piedmont. Around us, the rock walls offer many climbing cliffs and via ferrata routes scattered between Pont and Sparone.
- The valley opens up, and we finally arrive in Locana, the final stage of our second day. Locana is the most important municipality in the valley, with one of the largest territorial extensions in Italy, and it is the starting point of the protected area of the Gran Paradiso National Park.
- We will conclude the day with a typical meal at the "Da Tiziano" restaurant and an overnight stay at the beautiful eco-sustainable B&B "Camere d'aria."
Distance: Approximately 40 KM
Elevation gain: +550m
Elevation loss: -280m
Total time: Approximately 5-6 hours
Stage 3: From Locana to Ceresole Reale
- After breakfast, we start by ascending the Orco Valley, passing through the hamlet of Rosone (where the Piantonetto Valley branches off to the left).
- We continue along the route of the Giro d'Italia, avoiding the main road as much as possible and crossing the Orco River multiple times. The clear waters and gorges of the river invite us for a refreshing swim.
- We have now arrived in the village of Noasca, and the granite walls surrounding us become increasingly high and imposing. It was here, in the 1970s, that the "Nuovo Mattino" movement led by Gian Piero Motti was born and developed, revolutionizing the traditional mountaineering of those years and laying the foundations for free-climbing in Italy, following the model of what was happening in Yosemite, California.
- On the right, we can notice the "Torre di Aimonin," and shortly after, the famous waterfall of Noasca, one of the most important points of interest in the entire area.
- A few meters after the waterfall, we climb 4 very steep hairpin turns. Just before the tunnel that leads to Ceresole Reale, we take a small road on the left that bypasses the tunnel. This road was renovated and repaved for the stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2019.
- Here, the environment is magnificent. A narrow gorge surrounded by steep walls on both sides, including the impressive Caporal on the left, one of the most important climbing walls in the entire Alps and a stage for the history of national and international climbing.
- The valley then opens up again, and the "Tre Levanne" greet us majestically from their 3600m. On the right, the mythical "Sergent" appears, with its cracks and slabs that have made history in traditional climbing. Routes like "la Fessura della Disperazione" are a dream come true for generations of climbers from all over the world.
- We have now reached Ceresole Reale at 1550m, the last municipality in the valley and the starting point for numerous trekking itineraries in the heart of the wild Gran Paradiso National Park.
- We quickly reach the famous artificial lake of Ceresole and stop on its shores for a well-deserved lunch break and e-bike recharge.
- In the afternoon, we explore the village on our e-bikes and take a tour around the lake (approximately 10km), enjoying the fantastic panorama from different perspectives.
- We will have dinner and spend the night at "Lo Chalet del lago."
Distance: Approximately 35 KM
Elevation gain: +1100m
Elevation loss: -0m
Total time: Approximately 4 hours
Stage 4: From Ceresole Reale to Colle del Nivolet
- Here we are at the most scenic stage of our entire tour. We will pedal into the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park up to the 2600m-high Colle del Nivolet.
- After a hearty breakfast, we hop on our e-bikes and start gently ascending the Ceresole plain, reaching the Chiapili hamlet without difficulty.
- From here, the slope begins to increase, and the landscape opens up, changing radically. The pine and fir forests begin to thin out, giving way to green meadows populated by marmots, chamois, and ibex, as well as impressive and majestic cliffs.
- We leave the Carro Valley on our left, a paradise for spring ski touring and summer trekking, until we reach the first artificial lake after Ceresole, Lago Serrù, at an altitude of 2300m. This was the finish point of the Giro d'Italia stage in 2019.
- Here, we can pause and rest, enjoying the majestic panorama that this paradise offers us.
- We continue on the road towards Lago Agnel, the second and last artificial lake we will encounter on our route.
- We will ride on the dam wall where the road passes, continuing towards steeper slopes and ever-expanding panoramas.
- We are now almost at the pass. The lower lakes, Serrù and Agnel, offer an incredible view, and we can stop at the viewpoint for the customary photos and a well-deserved break.
- From the pass, we descend briefly into the Nivolet plain, characterized by many splendid lakes with characteristic colors and shapes. The view of Gran Paradiso and the adjacent mountains is breathtaking, and we can enjoy this environment during our lunch break.
- From here, we can either continue for a few minutes to visit Lago Rosset (2750m) and Leita', or begin the fast descent that will take us back to Ceresole and then to Locana, where we will spend our last night of the tour in paradise.
- We will have a typical dinner at the restaurant "da Tiziano" and spend the night at the beautiful eco-friendly B&B "Camere d'aria."
Distance: Approximately 60 KM
Elevation gain: +1250m
Elevation loss: -2200m
Total time: Approximately 6-7 hours
